I woke up with the early morning light streaming through my picture window. We had just pulled into Capreol, just north of Sudbury. (I have to remember not to be using the toilet while looking out my picture window when in a station...) I seized the opportunity to stretch my legs and ran alongside the train outside to the dome car instead of winding through the narrow corridors.
Sleep was quite fitful. The bed was surprisingly very comfy, but the clickety-clack takes a bit of getting used to. I had to get up in the middle of the night and rearrange my setup around the very tight space to access my noise isolating earbuds.
It wasn’t until breakfast that I found out that there is no WIFI on board! Of course it all makes sense now. There is no easy connection up here in the north as I well know from my last 6 years working in northern Ontario. Nevertheless, it was a bit of a shock--no internet for over 24 hours! I guess that will help with my resolution to not play computer games and puzzles. The upshot: my posts will be a bit spotty these few days.
I will not be bored despite the internet withdrawal I will be going through. It is lovely sitting here watching the antics of ducks nestled among the grass along the lake shoreline and getting fleeting glimpses of cute hamlets along the way. The passing scenery is very familiar to me. I was here in the north not more than 4 days ago. I wonder though, why does THE CANADIAN not take the southern route? I recognize that this train is not only for tourism, but also to service northern communities that are isolated except for the thrice weekly train service. However, if Canada wishes to show the rest of the world how beautiful it really is, I can think of no better way than to take people along the northern shore of Lake Superior. After travelling a good part of the world, I will still say that the drive along the north shore of Lake Superior is one of the most beautiful drives in the world. Just imagine a Lawren Harris painting--this is the original!
