July 2: Creative cooking

That man over there? That is the prime minister walking among us. Francis and his son accompanies me to the top of seemingly never-ending Mount Fébé. I finally reach the top, just about at the limit of my endurance. The country seems to be active and fit. Exercise is encouraged. Smoking is not commonplace. Yet the conditions lead to continuing low life expectancy--55 is the median age. Just these 2 past weeks, 6 of the national Red Cross staff had funerals to attend to. Culprits are likely poor diet, difficult living conditions, and virulent diseases.

‘Just go straight ahead until you see the Hilton,’ my instructions for the Casino supermarket. No, it isn’t as straightforward as that. After many a false turn and a near accident, I arrive for a quick walk around.

I am attending a potluck. I get creative with my limited kitchen. I make vegetarian crab cakes with potatoes and beans.
