November 10: All's well that ends well

We head out to a health centre for the training. A quiet excitement permeates among the trainer trainees. I sit back and let them do their thing. Haitian culture involves a lot of ‘talking to’. Is it culturally appropriate to teach them adult learning techniques? I explain interactive teaching methods and watch the message slowly diffuse into the sessions.

It was a success--I am on a high. I treat myself with a double dessert night of cinnamony baked apples and chewy brownies. Food in the Danish kitchen has been so good that the ‘mission diet’, which has worked so well for me in the past, seems to have failed. My scales will tell.

Tonight, I tell myself that I am going to just do a little bit of work and then take the rest of the night off. My colleague comments on my weaving walk. Extreme fatigue can cause more impairment than alcohol. Maybe this is what’s going on.... My ‘little bit of work’ takes me to 10:40 p.m.--so much for a night off. I call it a night--and I am not the last to leave the office! The whole cholera outbreak team has been pulling some very long hours.
