November 5: Applying childhood meteorology lessons

The past night felt very much like a sleepover party, but without the manicures and hair styling sessions. I am awakened by my phone. Gord Cochrane from CBC Metro Morning is calling for an update on Haiti. I slept through my alarm! Having a live radio interview in that just-awake state is just not my forte, I must admit. Oh well.

By dawn, Hurricane Tomàs had hit the southwestern tip of Haiti and is heading our way. By midafternoon, the storm has passed us by. We made it through the storm relatively unscathed. What has happened to the rest of Haiti remains to be seen. By 1 p.m. the first of the pre-positioned assessment teams headed out to check out Tomas’ destruction. How much more can Haiti take?

We move back into our tents. I see glimpses of red sky through the dark clouds at the end of the day. I remember my childhood mnemonics. “Red sky at night, a sailor’s delight.” I just hope this proves to be true.
