I set off for the twin villages of Monteverde and Santa Elena. To get to this remote spot, I take a minibus, then a boat across Lake Arenal, then another minibus up some very steep inclines on a very bumpy road for a total of 3 hours of travel. I am rewarded with vistas of lush green forests blanketing mountains.
I end up in Vista al Golfo, a nice little place that is not listed in the guide book, but far better than a couple of places that were. I meet 4 Irish, who invited me to join them on the Don Juan coffee tour. For a non-coffee drinker, I have a fabulous time harvesting coffee beans.
I hear about the highly recommended night walk, which leaves in an hour, so rush to join up.
I am in a rainforest so it should not be a surprise when I end up in the middle of a downpour.
We spot pygmy frogs and a toucan, along with mutmuts and brown jays.
Our guide points us to what he calls a friendly tarantula. This one is poisonous, but not deadly.
