April 2: Saddled up

Blue skies, double digit temperatures, a destination in mind: bike season starts today. No matter that I am surrounded by the dullness that bridges snow melt and street cleaning. Detritus, or worse, peaks out of melting snow piles. The tailwind going uphill, followed by headwind downhill is exhilarating work. I brunch with Rose and Alessandra at Melanie’s Bistro, a star in an otherwise lowbrow strip of the Danforth. I bike through mist. I look up: not a rain cloud above. The water source is the firefighter training academy. I spy a lighter moment in a serious occupation.

I attend another Cinefranco screening. I like Marcelle Lean’s film taste. This woman one-handedly screens, picks, and arrange all showings since Cinefranco’s inception 15 years ago. Toronto cinema goers are the beneficiaries of her endless hours spent with her passion. ‘Les Invités de mon père’ (‘The Guests of my Father’) is a comedic yet sensitive take on immigration and race issues.
