April 9: Doing it my way

Canoes and kayaks are stacked enticingly by the Harbourfront pier. The icy winds would preclude a pleasant paddle in calm waters. The groundhogs were so wrong this year. I bundle up and stay on the sunny side on a fast stroll to West Queen West.

I get a ticket for the Matt Dusk concert. Toronto’s Frank Sinatra. Soon after my introduction to Matt Dusk’s music in 2006, I attended one of his concerts at the Thunder Bay Auditorium. My second encounter was at CBC’s 2009 Sounds of the Season. He has aged well over these 5 years-- the awkwardness is all but gone. He opens with “All About Me”, the song that catapulted him to stardom. He continues with his signature songs: "Back in Town", "Two Shots".

He finishes with a good Canadian song, “I Did It My Way”. That could sum up my life: voluntary joblessness this year, no doc’s office, not ‘settling down’ and having a family, no TV, no car, and now no furniture. I guess, if at the end, my life is summed up by “I did it my way”, that wouldn’t be bad. But that is not my aim in life. What I prefer is that “I made a difference in someone’s life”.

  1. You did it your way you say? Yet you concentrate on what you have not. Let's see the right side here: you have creativity, talent, wisdom, you're surrounded by good friends and a love for life. You have the qualities of the heart and yes, you made a difference in someone else's life: mine.
