I am now dependent on friends to shuttle me to Graceful. D and I have a pleasant lunch over 3 hours, followed by a visit to Soma for hot chocolate and Douglas fir flavoured chocolate (I am going to have to learn how to make this).
I stop by Toronto’s only yerba mate cafe, El Almacen. My first experience with mate years ago left me over-caffeinated and awake till 3 a.m. Today’s version seems lighter. I recall an impromptu birthday celebration near Salta, Argentina. My fellow travellers’ rendition of “Happy Birthday” in Spanish, candle topped alfajores, coca tea, and mate--simple, yet one of my happiest birthday memories.
I continue with eating. Chef Nathan Isenberg serves a $25 “chef’s choice” menu (i.e. everything on the menu) for my foodie companions. We get our money’s worth and more with the dozen or so courses served over 3 hours. I refrain from consuming the supposedly nutritious organically farmed high protein crickets.
