December 3: Meeting soul mates...not mine, unfortunately

Instead of my usual routine of waking up to Metro Morning, I crawl out of bed to attend the yearly Sounds of the Season. This is CBC’s yearly live radio fundraiser. I arrive at 6 a.m. and already there is a lineup at the door. Each year, I have to arrive a bit earlier to get a seat! Great music is lined up once again. Last year’s silken voice belonged to Matt Dusk. This year’s is that of Denzal Sinclair, along with the big voice of Shakura Saida. Usually, there is lots of flux in the audience--people stopping by on their way to work or on their way home after work--not this year. Maybe the show is just getting too good or maybe the audience no longer have day jobs.

I see Sam, one of my writing classmates, in line. She is an even bigger fan of Matt Galloway and Metro Morning than I am!

I am invited to Anna’s home for dinner where I meet her cousin Maria and friend Vittorio. What a lovely couple--except they aren’t. These two have known each other for over 40 years, but as they put it “We’re still virgins’. We all laugh, but their story goes much deeper than a good laugh. These two, by all indications are best friends and soul mates. They are intelligent, curious, and exceptional conversationalists. We talk of iPhones and Albert Schweitzer, and much more. When Vittorio walked away for a few minutes, Maria intimates to me that even though Vittorio was interested in marrying her, she had chosen not to marry. She prefers a life without a husband. Once again, I meet beautiful people who opt not to conform to society.
