December 9: Not canoeing in the canoeing capital

Getting to Atikokan this morning was no easy feat: the snow was tumbling onto the highway fast and heavy.

Today is the first day back up here in the north for a week of work (see Sep 1’s entry regarding my parameters for this year).

Atikokan has dubbed itself the Canoe Capital of Canada. Yet there will be no canoeing today. The lakes are frozen and covered with a layer of powdery snow.

Lifestyle at this small town of about 3000 people in northwestern Ontario 2 hours west of Thunder Bay is vastly different from that of Toronto--and that is why I love coming up here. Canoeing, hiking, and skiing among quiet pine tree lined lakes, then returning to the city for the big lights is the perfect balance of rural and city living.

While Atikokan might not attract the polished acts and big names that Toronto does, it does have an enjoyable art scene. Tonight, I attend the entertainment series’ concert with Dala (AmanDA & SheiLA) from Scarborough.
