I walk into Snakes & Lattes’ excited buzz as players rejoice or bemoan their fates dictated by dice and cards. Instead of seeing cafe-goers typing away on computers or reading, patrons gather with friends to play one of the 3000 games that fill the shelves.
The place is not WIFIed for good reason. I watch two kids squealing each time the plastic shapes fly out of Perfection. I watch the middle-aged couple engrossed in play with their teenage son, Playstation’s beeps temporarily silenced. A novel idea: an unwired board game cafe in this wired world we now live in.
I head across the street for another touch of life before this millenium: a sandwich shop where all bread is ‘homemade’. The friendliness and pace is akin to life in a small town rather than downtown Toronto. The generous bowl of tomato orzo soup served with chewy sweet pecan whole grain bread oozes goodness. Delicious imaginative sandwiches are lovingly prepared to each customer’s preference. Here’s hoping that Sky Blue Sky Sandwich Company will be a beacon for the fast paced 21st century Bloor Street neighbourhood in which it resides.
