I visit the left brain part of town to do some right brain activity: I head to the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto to hear Andy Lamey talk about his new book, Frontier Justice. This is one of those “if I have time” events and almost did not attend but am glad I did. Lamey is a fascinating raconteur, weaving 3 fascinating stories together about how international refugee laws impact individual lives. It could have been a real yawner given the subject. I learn about U.S.’s detention of Haitian refugees in Guantanamo Bay, changes to the German constitution and Christmas Island refugee claim processing protocols, difficulties filing successful refugee claims in international zones, non-refoulement. He ends by saying that though not perfect, Canada recognizes the human rights of non-citizens. I listen with pride: this is a worthy achievement.
I have partners in crime, Chris and Margaux, join me at Local Kitchen & Wine Bar. An incredible offer is available every Tuesday this month: paying for the main course entitles us to a free appetizer and dessert at some very nice restaurants. Too good to be true? I read and re-read the fine print, expecting some catch. I bow in reverence at the freshly hand pulled mozzarella, served simply with a quality olive oil and a sprinkle of salt. This has got to be the best mozza in town.

I have been completely engrossed in "Frontier Justice." Lamey's book is eye-opening! I just stumbled across your blog, and I have to say that I am jealous that you got to attend that talk (and am a bit envious of what you had to eat as well). I haven't gotten to look over your whole blog yet, but I hope you have time to read the book!
