December 6: Remembering the Ecole Polytechnique massacre

Today is national day of remembrance and action on violence against women. I remember vividly the event that led to this day. Twenty-one years ago, Marc Lepine walked into the Ecole Polytechnique at the University of Montreal, a mere 2 kilometres away from my home, and gunned down 14 women. It could easily have been an English speaking student targeting the females at McGill instead.

Craig is in town with his new partner, Carolyn. Craig and I go back 3 decades to our school days in Richmond, B.C. When I first moved to Toronto, I visited a mutual friend, Nam, who informed me that Craig was also in town. We phoned Craig to see if he could join us. There was no answer so we headed off. Five minutes out the door and we ran into Craig! Toronto may have 3 million people, but at times, it does feel small. Over the years, we lost touch, but I ran into Craig another 3 times on the streets of Toronto. We stopped letting serendipity determine our encounters and finally exchanged contact info. For many years, Craig and I have shared monthly dinners, first reminiscing about old times, and later being each other’s support. I am inspired by his search for a new career to also work on my career path.
